DOORS-
  • Install wide angle peep hole.
  • Make sure that entrance doors have solid core.
  • Outdoor hinge pins should be non-removable.
  • Use wood or metal safety bar on closed sliding doors.
  • Locks on interior doors should be at least 40 inches from glass.
  • Use deadbolt locks that extend at least one inch into strike plate.
  • If you are moving into a new home – make sure to change the locks.
  • Do not leave garage door open – even when you are home.

WINDOWS-

 

  • Double hung windows should be pinned.
  • Make sure that windows left open for ventilation are secure.
  • Curtains and blinds should fully cover windows.
  • Air conditioners should be secured from the inside.

EXTERIOR-
  • Keep shrubs cut below window level.
  • Make sure that house number is easily visible from the street (and lit).
  • Keep every doorway well lit.
  • Keep bicycles, maintenance equipment, etc. out of sight.
  • Join your local neighborhood watch program and display decals on front & back doors.
  • Keep garage door closed and locked when not in use.
  • Remove vehicle keys and lock vehicles in the garage.
  • Make sure that garage is lit.

APARTMENT-
  • Use your first initials and last name to ID yourself on the lobby list.
  • Make sure that locks are changed when you move in.
  • Check the elevator before entering it.
  • Do not go into laundry rooms alone.
  • Check your car before entering it.
  • Do not store valuable items in an apartment locker.

ALARMS-
  • Alarms should protect the full perimeter of your residence.
  • Alarms should be monitored 24 hours a day by a UL approved monitoring station. (They may also qualify you for an insurance premium discount)
  • Display yard signs and stickers from Alarm Company.
  • Provide instructions to all family members and others using the alarm system as to its proper use and operation.
  • Always engage your alarm system when you leave, even if leaving for a short period of time.
  • Regularly change the batteries on all wireless monitored and local smoke and gas detectors.

VACATIONS-
  • Stop mail and newspaper delivery with post office, or have a neighbor pick up daily.
  • Use timers to turn lights on and off.
  • Arrange to have snow shoveled/grass cut while away.

CHILDREN-
  • Teach children how to reach the authorities by dialing 911 – rehearse with them what to say and make sure they know their complete address and telephone number.
  • Always leave phone numbers of where you are or the numbers of other caregivers who can be reached in an emergency.
  • Teach children to never answer the door or allow strangers into the house when an adult is not present.
  • Make sure children are aware of an escape route and know to exit during a fire.
